LISLE, Ill. – Longtime Must See Racing Sprint Car Series flagman Joseph Darrell ‘JD’ Wilbur passed away Nov. 22 at the age of 64.

Wilbur served as the chief starter for the winged asphalt 410 sprint car tour since its inception.

Prior to his time with Must See Racing, Wilbur was well-known in the motorsports industry for his time in American open wheel racing, serving as a starter for the CART FedEx Championship Series (later Champ Car) for many years.

“To say that all of us with Must See Racing are shocked and devastated at the sudden and tragic loss of J.D. Wilbur is a tremendous understatement,” noted Must See Racing president Jim Hanks. “J.D. was an integral part of our officiating team and his presence was felt by everyone who came into contact with him at our race events and race tracks. Since Must See Racing first began, he oversaw the action on track and I don’t ever remember a cross word or lack of respect ever being given to him.

“He was one of the best at what he did and his skill for the craft will be sorely missed,” Hanks added. “Our hearts will grieve, but we will race on in J.D.’s honor and carry forward with the same strength that he instilled in so many.”

Wilbur is survived and remembered by many, including children Christopher Wilbur, Jennifer (Jeremy) Overton and Michael (Megan) Wilbur; grandchildren Tristan, Madisyn, Myranda, Nollie, Mera, Alexis Banker, Brian Barcomb and Alyssa Overton.

He was the son of Kenneth and the late Janet Wilbur, the brother of Janice Locke and the late Kennette and Drew Wilbur and the uncle to many.

A memorial service for Wilbur will be held at a later date. He will also be honored by Must See Racing during the series’ upcoming season.
