September 23, 2013 – By Jacob Seelman for Speed 77 Radio and Race Chaser Online – Hickory, NC – The weather may be starting to cool off in Canada, but Canadian driver Ryan Mackintosh continues to heat up the tracks in the United States.
Just one week after winning the INEX US Legends Asphalt Nationals, Mackintosh returned to action in North Carolina with a surge of momentum at Hickory Motor Speedway. The US Legends feature was the undercard to the PASS South Series Over the Mountain 150 that was pushed to Sunday afternoon due to persistent rain on Saturday.
After the #03 NorthEastLegends.com / BAM Foyt Racing machine captured the pole on Sunday at Hickory, Mackintosh stormed to the early lead and never looked back en route to his 19th INEX win of the 2013 season. The race saw a competitive field of drivers from all INEX divisions combine to take the green and attempt to run down the “Flying Canadian”. Mackintosh was challenged throughout the race by Young Lion driver William Byron (NC) and over the final laps by veteran Pro class driver Kyle Beattie (NC).
Despite the field’s efforts, Mackintosh was able to hold off the late charge even while fighting a blown gasket and a smoking motor to capture the win at the historic facility. The win resulted in a weekend sweep for Mackintosh, who also won Friday night at Concord Speedway.
Kyle Beattie slipped underneath William Byron late to grab the runner-up position, with Ryan Shattuck also grabbing a podium position. Byron ultimately finished fourth, and Josh Brimecombe rounded out the top five.
The US Legends classes return to action in the Carolinas this Friday and Saturday night at Concord Speedway for the second-to-last race weekend of the 2013 points season.
