KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Having never set a tire on an intermediate-style track in race weekend conditions prior to Thursday afternoon, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie Justin Haley led the way in the series’ first practice session at Kansas Speedway.

The 18-year-old from Winimac, Indiana posted a top time of 30.297 seconds (178.235 mph) around the 1.5-mile oval and was the only driver to break into the 178 mile per hour bracket during the 55-minute session.

Haley enters the Toyota Tundra 250 race weekend fresh off an ARCA Racing Series victory at Talladega Superspeedway, another track he had never raced at prior to competing there last weekend.

The former NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion was nearly a tenth and a half clear of the rest of the field in his No. 24 Fraternal Order of Eagles Chevrolet Silverado.

Atlanta winner Christopher Bell proved that his early-season intermediate track speed was no fluke, landing second on the speed charts with a lap of 30.432 seconds (177.445 mph) in the No. 4 JBL Toyota Tundra.

Bell, who hails from Norman, Oklahoma, is seeking his fourth-career Truck Series win and second of the season at his quasi-home track.

Haley’s GMS Racing teammate, defending series champion Johnny Sauter, was third overall (30.435/177.427) ahead of the Toyotas of Noah Gragson, Matt Crafton and Cody Coughlin.

Austin Cindric, Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regular Kyle Busch, Chase Briscoe and Grant Enfinger completed the top 10.

Daytona winner Kaz Grala was 13th-quick, with other notables including dirt modified ace Stewart Friesen (17th), former Cup regular Regan Smith (20th) and Jordan Anderson (24th).
