FORT WORTH, Texas — Noah Gragson had to sweat out a very fast Johnny Sauter in the final moments of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series qualifying on Friday evening, but survived to claim his first-career pole at Texas Motor Speedway.

Gragson toured the 1.5-mile quad-oval in 29.168 seconds (185.134 mph), with his No. 18 Switch Toyota just edging out Sauter’s No. 23 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet by .003 of a second at the end of the run.

The effort for Gragson marked the first time he had topped qualifying in any NASCAR-sanctioned series since Sept. 5, 2015, when he won the pole for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at Idaho’s Meridian Speedway.

Sauter landed second with a lap of 29.171 seconds (185.115 mph), starting from the front row one week after winning at Dover Int’l Speedway.

Three Toyotas completed the top five, with two-time series champion Matt Crafton, Ryan Truex and Grant Enfinger qualifying third through fifth, respectively.

Kaz Grala posted the sixth-best time, ahead of Ben Rhodes, John Hunter Nemechek, Austin Cindric, Justin Haley, Cody Coughlin and Chase Briscoe among the dozen drivers who made the final round.

Myatt Snider was the first driver who missed the cut in round one, and will start 13th with a lap of 29.738 seconds (181.586 mph) in his No. 51 Louisiana Hot Sauce Toyota for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Timothy Peters laid down the 14th-best lap in his first drive for MDM Motorsports, while former Truck champion Travis Kvapil carried the Bolen Motorsports squad to 16th in time trials.

However, the biggest shock of round one was Christopher Bell, who was four-tenths of a second off the top 20 on his lap and will start 21st in the No. 4 Toyota, with a best time of 31.598 seconds (170.897 mph).
