ROSSBURG, Ohio – He may not be a dirt racer, but Myatt Snider had no trouble getting up to speed during practice for the Eldora Dirt Derby on Tuesday evening at Eldora Speedway.

Snider posted the fastest time overall between a pair of 50-minute practice sessions at the half-mile, Tony Stewart-owned dirt oval, lapping underneath the current track record of 19.709 seconds (91.329 mph) set by Ken Schrader during the inaugural Eldora event in 2013.

The 23-year-old Charlotte, N.C., native topped the charts at 19.661 seconds (91.552 mph) in his No. 13 Drug Mart/Louisiana Hot Sauce Ford for ThorSport Racing, leading a party of three ThorSport-prepared Ford F-150s in the top five on the speed charts.

“I’ve always prided myself in having what I would call good car control, but I’ve never gotten to see the extent of it on any kind of dirt,” noted Snider. “I guess it’s just a good thing that ThorSport Racing brings some great trucks for me to run every time I’m at the race track, because it definitely paid off tonight.

“I had a lot of fun on the dirt today. It’s definitely a big challenge, trying to  figure out how to run on a slick track like it was in the second practice, but I feel like I learned a lot of things that I can apply to the race tomorrow,” Snider added. “We had a lot of speed and I think that’s going to make things a lot of fun over the next 24 hours or so.”

Though Snider has little to no dirt experience under his belt, he ended the day grinning about his chances for Wednesday night’s 150-lap feature.

“I really feel that if we can keep this momentum up, we might have a shot at doing something special,” he said. “Matt (Crafton) and Chase (Briscoe) have been really great resources for me and given great information to all of us as a team; they’ve ran their share of the Eldora truck race before and their different philosophies on racing are all helpful to lean on.

“I’ve just done a lot of preparation by talking to a lot of different people and soaking in as much as I can … and testing a street stock (at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, N.C.) also helped a lot as well. I think it was a really good day for us, all in all.”

Stewart Friesen was second-quick overall, with a lap of 19.693 seconds (91.403 mph) in the No. 52 We Build America Chevrolet for Halmar-Friesen Racing. The top two in practice on Tuesday were both under Schrader’s track record time.

Grant Enfinger was third, followed by the Hattori Racing Enterprises Toyota of Brett Moffitt and the third ThorSport Ford of defending race winner Matt Crafton.

Chris Windom, Justin Haley, Cody Coughlin, Max McLaughlin and Tyler Dippel completed the top 10.

Thirty-two of the 39 trucks on the property were faster in first practice than the fastest time in final practice, which was laid down by Friesen at 20.893 seconds.

Sheldon Creed, Chase Briscoe, Snider and Todd Gilliland were the rest of the top five in Happy Hour, which began at roughly the same time that the green flag will drop on Wednesday night’s main event.

Other than a handful of solo spins, no major incidents occurred during either practice round on Tuesday.
