Drew Herring had as much reason to smile as frown after Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series knockout qualifying session at Iowa Speedway.

After all, his car was fast — the fastest of all, in fact.

The only problem? He won’t be racing it in Sunday’s 3M 250.

Herring, subbing for Erik Jones at the controls of the No. 20 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry, scored his second career NXS pole and second at Iowa with a lap of 134.391 mph in the third and last round of Coors Light Pole Qualifying on Saturday afternoon.

Herring will turn the car over to Jones, who finished second in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, for tomorrow’s event. As such, the 18-year-old will start from the rear of the field, just as he did Friday night after being late to the driver’s meeting.

Adding in young gun and NASCAR Next alumni Daniel Suarez, who qualified second at 134.351 mph in the No. 18 ARRIS Toyota, Joe Gibbs Racing swept the front row for Sunday’s 250-lap affair.

Richard Childress Racing’s Brian Scott was third-fastest (133.906 mph), but will move to the front row once Jones drops to the back on Sunday afternoon.

Chris Buescher () and Scott’s rookie teammate Brandon Jones () rounded out the fast five. Jones’ stellar run comes in advance of his NXS series debut.

Defending series champion Chase Elliott will start sixth, followed by Regan Smith, Darrell Wallace Jr., series points leader Ty Dillon and Elliott Sadler. Brendan Gaughan (11th) and Brennan Poole (12th) also advanced to the final round of knockout qualifying.

Ryan Blaney was the first car to miss the cut for the final round and will start 13th in the No. 22 Ford for Team Penske.

Ben Rhodes, who is missing his high school graduation to make his XFINITY Series debut in the JR Motorsports No. 88 this weekend, qualified 14th.

Other notables outside the top 15 included Daytona winner Ryan Reed (16th) and road-course specialist Boris Said (22nd), who is driving the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota and making his first XFINITY short track start since 2006 at Martinsville. Said raced the No. 54 once already this season, at Talladega Superspeedway on May 2.

The 3M 250 from Iowa takes the green flag Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern live on FOX Sports 1.
