The 20-lap Bandolero Outlaws feature saw Matthew Davey repeat his win from round five, notching his career-best third win of the summer by holding off Mike Gordon Racing teammate Matt Emery on a six-lap sprint to the checkered flag.
“We won last week and it was amazing, but this week we started seventh and I was so nervous,” Davey said after his fourth-career Outlaws win at the Shootout. “We get out there, I passed my teammate. I passed Tommy Good. D.J. Canipe was all over me. He got into me, he got sideways, I got sideways, and I kept it together. I thought my teammate was going to get me on that last restart, but I held him off. This is awesome. Two wins in a row.”
Blaise Maddox led the first 11 laps of the race before Davey took over on the 12th round off turn four. However, two laps later, near-disaster would strike as Davey’s title rival — D.J. Canipe — tried to duck to the inside for the lead and made contact, spinning himself out and nearly taking Davey with him.
Davey would hang on, however, despite another caution for a crash down the backstretch that took out Cameron Johnson on the restart. He ultimately beat Emery, Tommy Good, Isaak Love and Tristan Lesik to the checkered flag.
The Bandolero Bandits feature saw Cameron Bolin wire the field, leading all 20 laps for his second win of the summer over title rival Josh Kossek, Landon Rapp, Bryson Ruff and Josh Speas.
“Wow, I mean, they always say your second (win) is gonna be harder to get than your first, but I just went and proved all the naysayers wrong!” Bolin exclaimed. “My grandpa told me I just had to go out and hit my marks, so I did and we won again. This race car was fantastic tonight. I can’t believe it.”
Parker Eatmon led every lap of the Beginner Bandolero main event for his second consecutive win, allowing him to move up into the Bandits class for week seven.
The night’s specialty event was an exciting wrecker race presented by AAA of the Carolinas’ Disconnect and Drive campaign, which saw local tow trucks battle it out for the victory in a two-round showdown of the fastest two-man wrecker teams picking up a car and carrying it across the frontstretch.
Not one but two perfect rounds saw Mike Gatton and Gatton’s Towing emerge with the impressive victory. Gatton’s win came after an all-out final-round battle with Charlotte Motor Speedway track services.
“This is real cool,” Gatton said. “I was worried.”
Round seven of the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout will take place on July 19, with seven classes of Legends Car and Bandolero racing alongside the Little Luggies 600 Power Wheels event.
