CONCORD, N.C. — Forced into the daylight hours for the second consecutive week, Cameron Bolin (Outlaws) and Leland Honeyman (Bandits) took round three make-up Bandolero features during the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Starting seventh, Bolin charged up five spots in two laps, putting himself solidly in position early on as Tommy Good showed the way out front after starting from the pole position.
Bolin finally inherited the lead on lap eight, after Good was sent to the rear for a pair of jumped starts, and never looked back en route to his second-consecutive class victory.
The win was the seventh of Bolin’s Summer Shootout career.
“It sucks to win it that way,” Bolin admitted. “I wanted to pass Tommy for the lead, not have it handed to me like they did, but at the end of the day it is what it is. There’s a box that you’re supposed to go in … and he couldn’t hit it today, I guess.”
“Last year we struggled in the daytime and won all three of our races at night, so to come back this year and win two races already in the daylight … it shows how much effort my grandpa has put in to making this car better and I’m so thankful for all his help and support. We took a big swing at things last week and found something that’s working for us.”
Good led the first seven laps of the 20-lap feature, surviving two early cautions on laps two and four before being penalized prior to the lap eight restart.
That put him to the rear of the field, but in position to sneak through after a 15-car pileup on lap nine scattered the field and shuffled the front-runners.
None of the calamity was any consequence to Bolin, however, who raced to the line 2.579 seconds ahead of Trevor Wester as the twin checkered flags waved over the field.
Ethan Norfleet, Garrett Lowe and Matt Emery completed the top five.
In the Bandolero Bandits main event, Leland Honeyman passed Caden Kvapil with nine laps to go and ran away to claim his first division win at the Shootout and his third-career series win overall.
Honeyman took the win despite a restart with seven to go, after polesitter and opening lap leader Zac Fowler spun in turn two.
“I just tried to back up my corners a little bit, so I could get (Kvapil) tight off the corners putting the pressure on,” Honeyman explained of his move for the lead. “I got low and gassed it, and was able to get around him there … it feels really good to get the win, especially after coming so close last week.”
Kvapil passed Fowler on lap two and led the next 10 circuits before Honeyman took control for good.
Rapp eventually grabbed the second spot away from Kvapil in the closing stages, with Zack Miracle and Kade Brown completing the top five finishers.
