Ty Dillon topped Friday afternoon’s opening practice for the NASCAR XFINITY Series at Chicagoland Speedway.

Dillon, driving the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro for Richard Childress Racing, led the field in advance of Saturday’s Owens Corning AttiCat 300 (9:30 p.m. Eastern, FOX Sports 1, MRN, SiriusXM) with a best lap of 30.441 seconds (177.392 mph) around the 1.5-mile oval in the 85-minute session.

Dillon is one of a handful of drivers with NASCAR Sprint Cup experience entered in the second NXS standalone race of the 2015 season, and the top three spots on the speed charts were filled by drivers fitting that category.

Behind Dillon, Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney (30.530/176.875) slotted in second-fastest in the No. 22 Ford Mustang. Blaney is looking for his first NXS victory at the Chicago facility and his second career series win on a mile-and-a-half track.

Blaney was followed by Ty’s brother Austin, as the elder Dillon posted a lap of 30.560 seconds (176.702 mph). Dillon will be looking for his fifth career series win on Saturday and his third of the 2015 season. All four of Austin Dillon’s prior NXS victories have come on 1.5-mile tracks (Kentucky – 2, Las Vegas – 1 and Charlotte – 1).

Series points leader Chris Buescher (30.662/176.114) and Brian Scott (30.802/175.313) rounded out the fast five. Scott’s effort gave Richard Childress Racing three of the top five spots in practice.

A surprising effort by J.J. Yeley left him sixth on the board for JGL Racing, followed by Drew Herring (subbing for Erik Jones), Daniel Suarez, Brendan Gaughan and Darrell Wallace Jr.

Ross Kenseth was 13th-quick in his XFINITY debut for Joe Gibbs Racing, despite a spin off of turn four that nearly sent him into the wall, while defending series champion Chase Elliott was only able to muster a lap of 31.205 seconds — leaving him 17th on the board.
