Chase Elliott saved his best for the very end of the lone NASCAR XFINITY Series practice session on Friday at Michigan International Speedway.

Elliott, on his final lap as the red and black flags waved to end the session, powered to a quick lap of 37.654 seconds (191.215 mph) to top a 40-car field in his No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet.

The defending series champion ran a total of 34 laps during the session and will be looking to capture his first win of the season in Saturday’s Great Clips 250 Benefiting the Paralyzed Veterans of America (1:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, MRN, SiriusXM).

Elliott’s lap was a tenth and a half quicker than the driver he eclipsed — Aric Almirola ended the afternoon second-fastest in the Biagi-Denbeste Racing No. 98 at a clip of 37.806 seconds (190.446 mph).

Brian Scott led the Richard Childress Racing stable of drivers with the third-fastest lap (37.838/190.285) and tied Roush Fenway Racing’s Darrell Wallace Jr. for the most laps run in the session, with 45 circuits behind the wheel of his No. 2 Chevrolet.

Chris Buescher, a two-time winner this season, clocked in fourth-overall with an identical lap of 37.838 seconds and his teammate Wallace rounded out the fast five at 37.868 seconds (190.134 mph).

Former MIS XFINITY winner Paul Menard was sixth on the pylon, while Kyle Busch was seventh in his first NXS start since breaking his leg and foot in the season-opener at Daytona after sitting as high as second during the 95-minute open practice.

Joey Logano, Ty Dillon and Richmond winner Denny Hamlin rounded out the top ten, with defending Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Kyle Larson just outside the top ten in 11th.

Kevin Harvick, looking for his third XFINITY win of the year, was a disappointing 14th on the speed charts.

Qualifying for the NASCAR XFINITY Series takes place Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from the Michigan International Speedway.
