Logano and Johnson will share row seven after qualifying 13th and 14th, respectively, in the second round.
Logano was dejected after missing the final round of qualifying, but remains confident in his race car for Sunday’s race.
“I was dealing with a little bit of both (extremes),” the Middletown, Connecticut native said of his run. “Our car was a little free, and then it was a little tight other times, and it’s just hard to get back out there real quick … and go faster. It is what it is, though. We’ll start 13th and move forward from there. It’s going to be okay. We’re going to be alright. We’ll race hard and work on it (Saturday) in practice.”
Johnson’s qualifying effort was hindered by an early run that left him just 28th as the track cooled down in round one, but the six-time champion fought forward despite a caution for Landon Cassill’s spin with 57 seconds to go in the opening session, bumping his way into the top 24 and advancing.
Ultimately ending up just short of the final round, Johnson said: “I’m just so much better at racing (than qualifying). Line ‘em up and let’s go race.”
“That was wild. To have the caution come out certainly didn’t help us, and to have the tires be that old and (still) to post a respectable lap there is good for us. We were just off on that first run. It felt like an okay lap, but it was just slow. I was too free … but we worked on it. I felt like the lap when the caution came out, I would have been able to transfer and keep a lap off my tires, but it got me. What’s a championship race without a little drama, right?”
Other notables who were knocked out in round two included Kurt Busch (16th), Alex Bowman (19th) and Kyle Larson (24th).
Aric Almirola was the first driver eliminated from the first knockout round, posting a time of 30.841 seconds (175.092 mph) in the No. 43 Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports.
Gray Gaulding was the lone driver who failed to qualify for Sunday’s 400-mile race.
