JoJo Helberg laid claim to the title of “Fastest Man in Town” on Wednesday night at the Anderson Speedway, setting quick time during Engine Pro Time Trials in advance of the Must See Racing 60.

Helberg’s flying lap of 10.315 seconds (87.252 mph) was enough to top all comers after a brief rain shower delayed the start of qualifying by just over an hour and left teams scrambling to find the right setup for two quick laps.

The Rohnert Park, Calif. native did just that en route to his 11th career MSR Quick Time Award, and will have prime real estate when the 60-lap main event takes the green flag later tonight.

Florida veteran Mickey Kempgens backed up his runner-up showing from practice earlier in the day with the second-fastest lap in time trials, posting a top time of 10.461 seconds (86.034 mph) at the controls of his PCS Racing/MK Graphics No. 5 sprinter.

Kempgens was followed by two-time Pay Less Little 500 champion Jacob Wilson (10.463/86.017), who was third overall on the charts after missing the opening practice session earlier in the afternoon.

Practice leader Aaron Pierce (10.575/85.106) was a disappointing fourth in his time trial effort, with Jimmy McCune (10.799/83.341) rounding out the fast five.

The only incident of the session occured when Indianapolis native and indoor midget veteran Derek Bischak spun his No. 35 Snap-On/Angola Collision Services machine in turn two on his second lap. Bischak’s first lap of 11.175 seconds was good enough for eighth overall on the speed charts.

The Must See Racing 60 kicks off at roughly 8:45 p.m. local time, the first event in a packed week leading up to Saturday’s 67th annual Pay Less Little 500 pres. by UAW-GM.
