The win was the 39th of Busch’s career and his first since the 2016 Brickyard 400. It also marked his first race win since the passing of his grandmother, as well as the 100th win for Toyota since entering the premier series in 2007.

It also kept Busch from reaching an infamous record held by Harry Gant. Through 20 races, Busch had the second-highest number of laps led (1,040) by a winless driver in NASCAR Cup Series history.

That number trailed only Gant’s 1981 season, when he led 1,169 circuits without scoring a victory.

Harvick came home second but lauded Busch’s performance as the fastest driver throughout the weekend.

“Kyle was the class of the field all weekend; his car was really, really fast,” Harvick said. “He got the pole and the win and pretty much just charged right through the field. We’ve definitely got a little bit of work to do (as a team), but I feel like we’ve gotten closer. I think I raced around a bunch of Toyota’s all day, so I’m proud of everybody.”

“I knew the only chance I had was to get through the corner correctly,” he added. “I got in there and was loose all the way through the corner on entry … and I just kept holding the brake down and holding the brake down. I’m sure he thought I was going to go and I didn’t accelerate. I was trying to stay on the bottom, to park the thing to get going and he just had a good roll and got us.”

Truex followed in third after leading 31 laps earlier in the day. Hamlin and Keselowski completed the top five.

Stage 2 winner Clint Bowyer was sixth, ahead of rookies Daniel Suarez and Erik Jones, Matt Kenseth and Chase Elliott.

Once the final stage kicked off with 55 laps to go, the caution flag never flew again before the finish.

Joey Logano’s day fell apart when he was nailed for speeding on his final pit stop inside of 40 to go. Logano slid the tires as he came back down to serve the speeding ticket, then had to make a second pass-through penalty after taking fresh tires during the original pass-through on pit road.

The Team Penske driver was scored 27th at the finish, one lap down to the leaders.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns to action on Aug. 6 with the running of the I LOVE NEW YORK 355 at Watkins Glen Int’l, the final road course race of the Cup season.
