SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — Chase Cabre barnstormed to his first-career NASCAR K&N Pro Series East pole on Saturday afternoon, topping Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the first of two twin 100s at South Boston Speedway.
Cabre laid down a lap of 14.711 seconds (97.886 mph) around the recently-repaved four-tenths-mile oval, establishing a new track record with his No. 4 Rev Racing Toyota in the process.
“Man, this is an unreal feeling,” said Cabre after accepting the 21 Means 21 Pole Award. “I still can’t believe it. I got so excited over there watching (the end of the round). I saw the (No.) 12 (Harrison Burton) go out … and was nervous, but he slipped with a good race car and we had enough to hang on.”
“Mark Green got this car hooked up for me in practice yesterday; he really taught me a lot about what I needed to do to get around this joint. To be able to come out of it with the pole is amazing, and hopefully we can do the same thing later and bring home some hardware.”
Cabre was loose on the exit of turn four, but had speed and equated his qualifying run to “going out for a sprint car race.”
“It’s wide open all the time! Every chance you get, you have to give it everything you’ve got, and I did it on that run! I was sideways, for sure, but it was enough to hold on and I’m proud of that!”
The ‘Chase and Chase Show’ will lead the field to green for the first whosyourdriver.org Twin 100, as Chase Purdy qualified second-fastest with a time of 14.717 seconds (97.846 mph) in his No. 17 Bama Buggies Toyota.
Travis Miller was third for MDM Motorsports (14.720/97.826), followed by his teammate Harrison Burton, who led practice earlier in the day but could only muster the fourth-quickest lap (14.733/97.740) in group qualifying.
Todd Gilliland rounded out the Fast Five, followed by Vinnie Miller, Ruben Garcia Jr., Peyton Sellers, Tyler Dippel and Dillon Bassett.
Toyotas swept the top eight starting positions in qualifying, just as they did in Saturday afternoon’s practice.
Cabre’s effort marked the sixth-career pole for Rev Racing and first since 2012, when Kyle Larson led the field to green at Bowman-Gray Stadium.
It also marks the second-consecutive pole for a NASCAR Drive for Diversity member in K&N East action at South Boston, after Darrell Wallace Jr. collected top qualifying honors for the series’ most recent race there in 2011.
The first whosyourdriver.org Twin 100 is slated to take the green flag at 7 p.m. ET.
