DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Report by Race Chaser Online Managing Editor Jacob Seelman — Chad Coleman photo —

Monday night at Daytona International Speedway, Chad Coleman became more than a backup driver — he was Superman to the single-car RP Motorsports team.

Coleman, subbing for Ronnie Potts in the Raybestos Brakes No. 7 Ford Fusion, clocked a fast lap of 46.856 seconds (192.078 mph) around the 2.5-mile tri-oval during Garry Mercer Trucking Pole Qualifying to top not just qualifying Group A, but the entire =RSR= Full Throttle Cup Series field.

The two-group, two-lap, single-car session set the front row for next Monday’s =RSR= Full Throttle Cup Series Daytona 250 (Feb. 23; 9 p.m. Eastern on LSRTV), as well as the starting lineups for Monday night’s Full Throttle Duels at Daytona, which determine the remainder of the 43 starting positions.

By virtue of his effort, Coleman received his first-career Garry Mercer Trucking Pole Award and placed Potts’ machine in position to lead the field to the green flag in the season-opening event.

“It was just a great lap,” a surprised Coleman said. “I didn’t expect it to be pole at all.”

Due to Real Sim Racing’s substitute driver rules, Potts will not have to give up his starting position when he climbs in his machine on race day, as a driver is permitted three subs during the 2015 season due to extenuating circumstances.

Alongside Potts on the front row will be the No. 13 Oreo Chevrolet of Dwayne Vincent, who clocked in fastest in Group B and second-quickest overall with a clip of 46.859 seconds (192.066 mph). Vincent most recently finished second the the 2014-15 =RSR= Icebreaker Winter Series points standings to eventual champion David Comstock.
