FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Mike Fedorcak grinned from ear to ear after climbing from his car in the midst of a resurgent weekend at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum Expo Center.
And he had good reason to, after becoming the oldest national midget fast qualifier in Rumble in Fort Wayne history Saturday afternoon during two-lap time trials.
Fedorcak took his No.. 97 Physical Medicine Consultants Munchkin to a blistering time of 7.753 seconds around the one-seventh mile concrete oval, earning his third career Rumble Fast Time Award and first since the 2012 finale.
“It’s like I said last night, miracles do still happen,” Fedorcak joked after climbing from his car. “It was a good lap. I thought maybe there were a couple guys that could beat us, but it’s nice to be back on top with this Munchkin. It’s a special car.”
17-time Rumble feature starter Joe Liguori, who is still looking for his first-ever Fort Wayne victory – timed in second-fastest with a lap of 7.808 seconds – just ahead of Friday night winner Russ Gamester’s time of 7.879 seconds.
2014 Rumble points champion Bryan Nuckles (7.890) and Nick Hamilton (7.922) were fourth and fifth-fastest, respectively.
Matt Westfall, Geoff Kaiser, Travis Welpott, Chance Rice and Kody Swanson completed the top-10.
Defending Saturday night winner Kyle Hamilton was 15th-quick, while all-time Rumble fast qualifier and feature winner Tony Stewart struggled all afternoon and could only muster the 19th-best lap in time trials.
Cap Henry posted the fastest qualifying lap of the weekend in any class when he took top honors in the winged 600cc micro class with a time of 7.692 seconds, while Larry Joe Sroufe led the way in drills for the non-winged 600cc micro class with an 8.224-second clip.
Opening ceremonies and the presentation of the David Lesiecki Award are set for 7 p.m.
