RIDGEWAY, Va. — Clint Bowyer was fastest in the final round of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series final practice for Sunday’s STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway (2 p.m. EDT, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM).
The driver of the No. 14 Haas Automation Ford posted a quick time of seconds ( mph) to top the leaderboard on Saturday afternoon. He was one of five Fords that was in the top 10, as the Emporia, Kansas native was joined by Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney and Aric Almirola. Kyle Busch was second on the charts with a time of seconds ( mph) and was the fastest Toyota, while Jamie McMurray paced the Chevrolet camp with the third-fastest time of the session.
Erik Jones had a strong run in practice, completing his fastest lap in 20.265 seconds (93.442 mph) and making his No. 77 5-hour ENERGY Extra Strength Toyota the seventh-fastest car in final practice. Teammate Martin Truex, Jr., the polesitter for the fall 2016 race here, was close behind with the 11th fastest time.
The Hendrick Motorsports drivers were all found around the center of the timesheet, with Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Chase Elliott and Kasey Kahne all posting the 19th, 20th, 22nd and 24th best times respectively. They were joined in the 20s by two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, Matt Kenseth and Daniel Suarez. Kenseth was 23rd fastest while Suarez was 25th. Kurt Busch was the slowest of the returning drivers from the 2016 playoffs, as he was only 29th fastest.
