OVID, Mich. — Two-time defending Must See Racing Sprint Car Series champion Jimmy McCune lowered the boom in final practice for the Firecracker 50 at Owosso Speedway, posting the fastest lap of the day so far ahead of Abe’s Auto Parts Time Trials.
McCune, who won the Independence Day weekend event one year ago after a late battle with Jason Blonde, toured the three-eighths-mile oval in 13.381 seconds (100.889 mph) to earn the tail-end position in the qualifying order.
Driving the No. 88 Abe’s Auto Parts & Sales/B&B Machinery Movers sprinter, McCune is chasing his second-career win at Owosso and 19th win overall with the series in Saturday night’s 50-lap feature.
Brian Gerster, who led the first practice session earlier in the day, was slightly slower in the final round, posting a best lap of 13.595 seconds (99.301 mph) in the No. 50m RAM Engineering ‘Mopar Missile’ for Dick Myers Racing.
Michigan native Ike Beasley led the home state contingent in third, driving his No. 97 Muchalaw.com/1-800-Radiator entry to a time of 13.868 seconds (97.346 mph), with Derek Snyder and Anthony McCune completing the top five on the speed charts.
