When it comes to Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South division qualifying, there’s no one better than Preston Peltier — and that was true again on Saturday afternoon at Greenville Pickens Speedway.

Against a 32-car field of super late models for the third annual Winter Meltdown, Peltier recorded a quick lap of 17.797 seconds (90.923 mph) in two-lap time trials to secure his 19th career PASS South Fast Qualifier Award, extending his all-time series record in that category in the process.

Hermon, Maine veteran Mike Hopkins was nipping at Peltier’s heels in qualifying, however, posting the second-quickest lap of the weekend at 19.886 seconds (90.516 mph). Hopkins is looking for his first-career PASS South victory after a promising run in last year’s North-South Shootout was cut short due to a late-race accident.

PASS South veteran Roger Lee Newton clocked in third overall (19.905/90.430), with New England’s Derek Ramstrom (19.946/90.244) and Legends car graduate Matt Craig (20.052/89.767) — who led the final practice session on Saturday — rounding out the “Fast Five.”

Mike Faulk, reigning PASS National champion Joey Doiron, Tyler Church, Jay Fogleman and Trey Jarrell were the balance of the top 10 qualifiers and all made the redraw for the pole position. Newton and Church drew the front row positions for the Winter Meltdown feature, with Peltier moving back to sixth for the green flag.

The top 20 cars in time trials transferred directly to the main event, while Tate Fogleman starts on the pole of the 10-lap last chance race to determine the final six cars to make the 150-lap main event.

Joey Padgett was the only car to not take a lap in qualifying, after a practice crash left his team scrambling just to repair the race car in time to attempt the last chance race.

Practice leader Dylan Hall looked like the driver who was going to secure the Southeast Limited Late Model Series pole until the final group went out to qualify — shaking up the top of the rundown and leaving a surprise name atop the final rundown.

The No. 61 of Justin Hicks posted a best lap of 20.784 seconds in the final group of European-style qualifications to garner top honors for the Limiteds, with Hall (20.852) slotting in second behind him. SELLM rookie Chase Purdy was third-quick, with fellow young guns Colby Howard and Luke Sorrow rounding out the top five.

Two-time GPS track champion and current track promoter/manager Anthony Anders (20.618) led the Southeast Super Truck Series in their qualifying session and B.J. Thrasher (23.363) topped qualifying for the Mayhem Mini Stocks.

Feature racing for the third annual Winter Meltdown at Greenville Pickens Speedway kicks off just after 2:15 p.m. ET, and for more information on Greenville Pickens Speedway, visit the track website at www.greenvillepickens.com.
