DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — As often happens when the draft comes into play at Daytona Int’l Speedway, a surprise name ended up on top of the board at the end of the first NASCAR XFINITY Series practice Thursday at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Jeb Burton topped the charts with a lap of 47.315 seconds (190.215 mph) in his No. 24 Toyota for JGL Racing, taking only two laps around the 2.5-mile high banks but showcasing a lot of speed as he seeks his first-career series win in a part-time schedule.

Burton took the advice of his uncle Jeff, who told him from the NBC Sports broadcast booth that if it were him, he would “park it and not run again” after being fastest with just two laps on the piece.

Despite both being involved in an incident just five minutes into practice, Cole Custer and Spencer Gallagher landed second and third overall on the board, showing speed in their primary cars moments before they were crashed in Turn 3.

Custer’s best lap was a time of 47.322 seconds (190.186 mph), just .007 of a second off of Burton’s best clip, while Gallagher posted a 47.351-second circuit (190.070 mph) before losing a left-rear tire and collecting Custer.

Casey Mears and Ty Dillon completed the Fast Five, followed by Daniel Suarez, defending Daytona winner Ryan Reed, Dakoda Armstrong, Joey Logano and Matt Tifft.

Tifft’s run sees him complete the top-10 nearly one year to the day following surgery to remove a brain tumor that put him out of competition in last summer’s Daytona XFINITY race.

Final practice for the NASCAR XFINITY Series at Daytona Int’l Speedway kicks off at 4 p.m. ET (NBCSN).
