STATESVILLE, N.C. – GMS Racing confirmed Thursday evening that Johnny Sauter will serve as the interim driver of the No. 23 Chevrolet Camaro for Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway.
Sauter will fill in for Spencer Gallagher, who was indefinitely suspended by NASCAR on Tuesday for a violation of the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy.
Gallagher was coming off his first Xfinity Series victory at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, but his suspension will make him ineligible for the playoffs later on in the season.
NASCAR confirmed this week that Gallagher will not be allowed a waiver to become championship-eligible upon his return, which will come once he completes the Road to Recovery Program and is reinstated by the sanctioning body.
Sauter won the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship for GMS Racing, the organization’s first NASCAR national division title since its inception in 2011, when it began competition in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards.
Saturday’s OneMain Financial 200 at the one-mile, high-banked concrete oval will mark Sauter’s first Xfinity Series appearance since 2014, when he drove three races for Hattori Racing Enterprises in the No. 80 Toyota.
The Wisconsin native has three Xfinity Series wins, with the most recent one coming in 2005 for James Finch in the No. 1 Yellow Transportation Dodge at The Milwaukee Mile.
More information on additional plans for GMS Racing’s full time Xfinity Series entry beyond Dover will be released at a later date.
