DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Justin Allgaier reveled in his first NASCAR Xfinity Series win of the season over the weekend at Dover Int’l Speedway, but many of the benefits from that win were stripped on Wednesday as part of a sweeping round of NASCAR-issued penalties.
Allgaier’s No. 7 Chevrolet was found to be in violation of section 20.14.2.h of the NASCAR Rule Book, which deals with rear suspension trailing arm angles and pinion angle shims. As a result, his team was issued an L1-level penalty.
The rule states that the truck trailing arm spacer and pinion angle shim surfaces must be in complete contact at all points and at all times. If they are not, additional side force can be generated as a result.
Allgaier and JR Motorsports have lost the five playoff points they banked for securing the win, as well as been docked 25 driver and owner points. Crew chief Jason Burdett was also fined $25,000 and suspended from the next two Xfinity Series points races at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway and Pocono (Pa.) Raceway.
Though Allgaier cannot use his Dover win to qualify for the playoffs due to the penalties, he does keep the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus that he earned by winning the race. His teammate Elliott Sadler, Brandon Jones and Ryan Sieg were also contenders for the six-figure payout on Saturday.
Also penalized in the Xfinity Series on Wednesday was the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing team of Jeb Burton, which received an L1-level penalty for a non-compliant splitter discovered during opening day inspection on Friday.
Specifically, Burton’s team was found in violation of sections 20.4.3.a and 20.4.3.b of the NASCAR Rule Book.
As such, crew chief Nick Harrison was fined $10,000 and car chief Michael Scearce has been suspended for the next Xfinity Series points race at Charlotte later in the month.
Burton finished 12th at Dover on Saturday, his second race for RCR this season.
Both teams can appeal their penalties to the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. Should they do so, any crew suspensions would be deferred until after the appeal is heard.
In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the No. 4 Kyle Busch Motorsports team of Todd Gilliland was assessed a safety violation for one lug nut that was not safe and secure after Friday’s JEGS 200 at Dover.
Crew chief Wes Ward was fined $2,500. Gilliland finished a season-best 10th in Friday’s Truck Series race.
Three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams were also issued L1-level penalties on Wednesday.
