April 5, 2014 — report by Managing Editor Jacob Seelman for Race Chaser Online — Speed51.com/Brenda Meserve photo — SOUTH BOSTON, VA — Last year’s NASCAR WHELEN Southern Modified Tour (NWSMT) Rookie of the Year may have taken a couple races to get heated up, but he’s back at full song now.

25-year-old Danny Bohn, out of Freehold, New Jersey, bested all comers to claim the Coors Light Pole Award in qualifying on Saturday for the South Boston 150, the third race of the NWSMT season.

Bohn laid down a fast lap of 14.784 seconds (97.403 mph) around the history-laden 4/10-mile Virginia oval to narrowly edge Andy Seuss for the pole. Seuss, who won the inaugural Tour race at South Boston in 2009, missed grabbing his second pole of 2014 and 11th career by 0.003 seconds and will start on the outside of the front row after posting a 14.787 second lap (97.383 mph).

Kyle Ebersole qualified third (14.895; 96.677 mph), with rookie Joe Ryan Osborne clocking in fourth with a lap of 14.903 seconds (96.625 mph). Points leader JR Bertuccio completed the top five (14.914; 96.554 mph).

Rookie Spencer Davis, defending race winner and four-time tour champion George Brunnhoelzl III, Bryan Dauzat, Jason Myers and Thomas Stinson made up the rest of the top ten qualifiers.

2010 WHELEN Southern Modified Tour champion Burt Myers did not post a lap in qualifying and will start at the back of the field after changing the engine in his #1 Ford.
