Former Richmond International Raceway winner Kasey Kahne put his No. 5 Great Clips Chevrolet SS back in a familiar position during Friday’s final NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice session — on top.

Kahne will be looking to end a recent streak of dominance for the Ford camp at Richmond (the Blue Ovals have won the last three RIR races) — and coincidentally knocked a Ford driver off the top of the scoring pylon with the fastest lap of the day, 21.368 seconds (126.357 mph) — to win the session.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver won the spring race at Richmond in 2005 from the pole, driving for Evernham Motorsports.

The Ford that Kahne knocked off — the No. 16 of Greg Biffle — put up a surprisingly-fast lap of 21.401 seconds (126.162 mph) to slot in second on the board, a bright spot for his team after weeks of struggling across the entire Roush Fenway Racing camp.

“I don’t know if we just got lucky, or we’re starting to figure it out,” said Biffle of the new car that RFR debuted two weeks ago at Texas. “Really happy with where we’re at today, though.”

Carl Edwards was third-quick (21.424 / 126.027) for Joe Gibbs Racing in the No. 19 ARRIS Toyota, giving all three manufacturers representation in the top three spots on the practice charts.

Jamie McMurray (21.454 / 125.851) and hometown favorite Denny Hamlin (21.456 / 125.839) rounded out the fast five.

Martin Truex Jr. was sixth overall, followed by a stunning run for underfunded Hillman-Smith Racing and Landon Cassill, who clocked in seventh on the charts.

Additional drivers to impress were Brett Moffitt, who is reportedly in his final start behind the wheel of the No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota this weekend, in eighth and David Gilliland for Front Row Motorsports in ninth. Jimmie Johnson, who led the majority of the session in his Lowes Chevrolet, rounded out the top ten.

Brad Keselowski, the most recent Richmond winner, was 15th fastest, while defending Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick was 20th on the speed charts in final practice.

Three-time Bristol winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. struggled trying to find the balance on his car, and was a disappointing 34th on the board. Earnhardt will be looking to tie Kyle Busch with a fourth RIR victory on Saturday night.

Coors Light Pole Qualifying kicks off for the stars and cars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at 5:45 p.m. Eastern, live from Richmond on FOX Sports 1.
