Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Daniel Hemric surprised many onlookers after he shot to the top of the practice charts in his first-ever visit to the Michigan International Speedway on Friday afternoon.

Hemric, currently seventh in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points, topped the first hour-long session for the Trucks around the two-mile oval with a best lap of 38.917 seconds (185.009 mph). Hemric was also the only truck to top the 185-mph mark during the practice session.

Just as they did in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice, Chevrolets and Toyotas dominated the leaderboard, with the No. 13 Toyota Tundra of Cameron Hayley making it a rookie sweep of the top two spots after the 19-year-old posted a lap of 39.091 seconds (184.186 mph) for ThorSport Racing.

Fellow 19-year-old Erik Jones followed his two peers in the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 4 Tundra, rounding the MIS oval in 39.113 seconds (184.082 mph) on his 12th of 16 laps to go third-quick.

Sprint Cup Series regulars Alex Bowman (39.126/184.021) and Kyle Busch (39.161/183.856) rounded out the fast five in the session. Bowman will be making his first-career NCWTS start on Saturday in the JR Motorsports No. 00, while Busch will be looking for his second consecutive series win after triumphing in his first Truck start of the season last time out at Pocono.

Johnny Sauter, Austin Dillon, rookie Cody Coughlin, John Hunter Nemechek and Ryan Blaney capped off the top 10.

Championship contender Tyler Reddick and two-time defending series champion Matt Crafton were 11th and 13th, respectively, of the 29 trucks that took time during the session.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to action for final practice at 3 p.m. Eastern time, with tape-delayed coverage of the session airing at 8 p.m. Eastern on FOX Sports 1.
