FONTANA, Calif– The only practice session on Friday for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series at Auto Club Speedway is in the books and at the top of the charts should be no surprise, as the points leader, the No.42 of  Kyle Larson goes to the top of the board.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver and California native landed a lap of 38.081 (189.071 mph). In second, is Denny Hamlin (38.204/188.462 mph). The 2011 winner of this race, Kevin Harvick finishes up P3 (38.228/188.344 mph). Rounding out the top-5 is Larson’s teammate, Jamie McMurray and Joey Logano.

The practice session was stopped only twice. One caution for an owl that had found his way on the track in turn one, he would fly away. Luck would not be that kind to the defending race winner, Jimmie Johnson. As Johnson found himself tagging the turn 4 wall and spinning into the grass. The No.48 team has elected to go to a backup car as a result of their damage.

The next on track activity for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be Qualifying for the Auto Club 400, Friday March 24, 2017 at 4:05 pm ET. (FS1, MRN, Sirius XM)
