CONCORD, N.C. – Qualifying for the Monster Energy Open at Charlotte Motor Speedway has been cancelled due to two rain delays that have pushed back the afternoon on-track schedule.
As a result, the lineup will be set by the current car owner standings, as of last weekend’s KC Masterpiece 400 at Kansas Speedway.
Rain moved into the Concord area at 11:30 a.m. ET, after a single lap of practice had been completed for the combined Open and All-Star fields. The weather delayed on-track activity for more than an hour before cars returned to the race track for a handful of additional circuits around the 1.5-mile quad-oval.
Finally, a second storm hit the track at 12:45 p.m. that soaked the proceedings and scrapped Open qualifying, which was to be comprised of single-car runs. As of 2 p.m. ET, on-track activity at CMS was still on hold.
Aric Almirola will lead the field to green for the 50-lap Open, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. ET start on Saturday and will be broken up into three stages of 20, 20 and 10 laps, respectively.
Almirola’s No. 10 Waffle House Ford will be joined on the front row by the No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota of Erik Jones. The duo are 10th and 13th, respectively, in owner points.
The Hendrick Motorsports pair of Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott will share the second row of the grid, with Paul Menard completing the top five starters.
Each of the three stage winners will advance into Saturday night’s Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race, along with the Fan Vote winner.
