DARLINGTON, S.C. – Kyle Larson continued his domination of the 69th annual Bojangles’ Southern 500 by rolling to another stage win during the second 100-lap stage on Sunday night.
However, perhaps more important was the fact that Larson lapped Austin Dillon by about two inches coming to the green-and-white checkered flag, pinning rival Martin Truex Jr. a lap down in the process.
Larson used a strategy play to secure his second stage victory of the night and third of the season, staying out after his lone pit stop during a caution flag at lap 128 for Joey Gase’s hard crash on the frontstretch. That allowed him to take the lead on lap 160 and run away, thanks to his fresher tires.
From there, Larson cruised through the final 41 laps of the second stage, crossing a whopping 11.107 seconds ahead of Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski, who unlapped himself after pitting for fresh tires and charged back through the field to second.
Keselowski’s teammate Joey Logano was third, followed by Chase Elliott and Erik Jones.
Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray and Kevin Harvick completed the points-scoring drivers in the top 10 at the second stage break.
Truex, who was as far as two laps down following an uncontrolled tire penalty on his green-flag pit stop, ended the second stage 16th and was the second car a lap down to the leader.
Larson has now led 159 of the first 200 laps. Gase’s crash was the only incident during the second stage.
