DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A quartet of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams were penalized on Wednesday for unsecured lug nuts following the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway.
The No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet of Austin Dillon, the No. 12 Team Penske Ford of Ryan Blaney, the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford of Michael McDowell and the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet of Kyle Larson each had one lug nut that was not safe and secure at the end of Monday’s snow-delayed event.
As a result, crew chiefs Justin Alexander, Jeremy Bullins, Derrick Finley and Chad Johnston were each fined $10,000.
In Bullins’ case, the Martinsville weekend marked the second time in three races that he took a hit to the wallet for an improperly-installed lug nut, following a similar $10,000 fine for one loose lug on the No. 12 Ford at Arizona’s ISM Raceway two weeks earlier.
For the other three crew chiefs, Wednesday’s announcement marked their first lug nut penalties of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.
Of the four teams penalized, Blaney was the driver who scored the highest finish on Monday, coming home third behind winner Clint Bowyer and runner-up Kyle Busch after leading 145 of 500 laps.
No penalties came out of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Wednesday, after post-race inspection came back clear following Monday’s Alpha Energy Solutions 250.
Notably, the Truck Series is the only one of NASCAR’s top three divisions that is not required to use NASCAR’s standardized Paoli air guns, introduced in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series this year as a cost-containment measure.
Following a week’s break for the Easter holiday, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series will return to action April 6-8 at Texas Motor Speedway.
