KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott led the way during the first day of a two-day organizational test for Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams on Monday at Kansas Speedway.
Elliott turned a lap of 28.958 seconds (186.477 mph) around the 1.5-mile oval in the No. 9 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, outpacing the rest of the competition by more than four tenths of a second.
The Dawsonville, Ga., native scored his track-best finish of fourth during last year’s Kansas playoff race.
Jamie McMurray trailed Elliott in second in another Chevrolet. His best lap was in stark contrast to Elliott’s, at 29.387 seconds (183.755 mph) for Chip Ganassi Racing. Like Elliott, McMurray is seeking his first Kansas win during next month’s Hollywood Casino 400.
A pair of Toyotas were third and fourth on the Monday speed charts at Kansas, with current series points leader Kyle Busch (29.448/183.374) just ahead of defending series champion Martin Truex Jr. (29.496/183.076) in the rundown. Both Busch and Truex have a win at Kansas in the past.
Five Fords were next behind Truex on speed. Joey Logano completed the top five, ahead of Paul Menard, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth and rookie Cole Custer. Chris Buescher was 10th in a Chevrolet.
Ty and Austin Dillon completed the list of 12 drivers who attended Monday’s test.
Drew Herring, Justin Allgaier and David Ragan were also at the track, testing in wheel-force entries for Toyota, Chevrolet and Ford, respectively.
One driver from each Cup Series team was permitted to attend this week’s organizational test, which will conclude with another all-day session on Tuesday.
