KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Aric Almirola kept his recent run of momentum going by topping the second practice session for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on Saturday morning at Kansas Speedway.

Almirola, who won the series’ most-recent event at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway last weekend, turned a best lap of 28.926 seconds (186.683 mph) with the No. 10 Smithfield Ford. He ran a total of 33 circuits during the 55-minute session.

The Toyotas of Erik Jones (28.939/186.599) and Martin Truex Jr. (28.977/186.355) were second and third, respectively, followed by Almirola’s teammate Clint Bowyer and a third Toyota in Kyle Busch.

Truex and Busch have combined to win three of the last five Cup Series races at Kansas.

The only notable incident during the session was 19 minutes in, when smoke started pouring from the back of Jamie McMurray’s No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet. McMurray immediately took his car to the garage while cleanup ensued on the racing surface.

Five minutes were added to the end of the practice session to offset the extensive clean-up time.

The incident is the second of the weekend for the Ganassi team, which saw Kyle Larson crash his primary car during Friday’s lone practice session. Larson rebounded to sixth-quick Saturday morning.

Ryan Newman, Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman and polesitter Joey Logano completed the top 10.

Three-time Kansas winner Kevin Harvick was the lowest of the playoff drivers not already locked into the next round, only mustering the 20th-best lap, while Dover winner Chase Elliott ended up 22nd overall.

The No. 00 of Landon Cassill, the No. 23  of JJ Yeley, the No. 66 of Timmy Hill and the No. 99  of Kyle Weatherman all lost 15 minutes in Saturday’s opening practice for being late to qualifying inspection.
