Self-admittedly, Dwayne Vincent thought his two-tire strategy in the closing laps of Monday night’s RSR Icebreaker Winter Series event at Homestead-Miami Speedway wasn’t the winning call.

As it turned out, it was the call that handed the driver of the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet the checkered flag and the points lead.

Vincent took just right side tires after the final caution of the race flew at lap 113, then held off race-long challenger David Comstock on an eight lap sprint to the finish to claim the victory in spectacular fashion.

“To be honest with you I didn’t think that call was going to work either,” Vincent laughed in Gatorade Victory Lane. “I thought there were going to be some cautions; I saw (Garrett Atwell) get loose there on the last restart and I thought that would be a caution, and when that didn’t happen I thought I was a sitting duck.”

“Two tires, no fuel and just drove the heck out of it. I really appreciate David racing me clean — he could have easily bumped me out of the way for the win but he didn’t, and I will return the favor.”

Vincent led 85 of the race’s 125 laps en route to the checkered flag, his second win of the 2014-2015 winter season.

Comstock, who finished second, gave Vincent a shot in turn four on the final lap but couldn’t get all the way underneath him to make the run on the bottom for the victory — coming up 0.078 seconds short.

“I really thought four tires was going to be the call to win the race, I didn’t think two tires would give guys the speed to hold up,” Comstock said. “Dwayne drove the wheels off it though, and I gotta race him clean because we’re both fighting for the championship. Congrats to him, and we’ll take this Monster Energy machine to Fontana next week and see how it turns out.”

Polesitter Bobby Terrell made a charge at the end of the event to finish third after being mired outside the top five for much of the closing stages, with E.J. O’Rourke finishing fourth and Scott Simley rounding out the top five.

Brian Macklin, who spent the first half of the race inside the top five, got caught up under caution at lap 58 with Ed Williams Jr. and retired from the event with damage to his No. 30 FedEx Express Chevrolet. Garrett Atwell had a strong run going late and restarted second on the final run, but got loose and fell back into a four-wide scramble before soldiering home in 12th.

The race featured four cautions for 18 laps, including the final one with twelve laps to go when the No. 47 of Shawn Breitzman spun racing O’Rourke for sixth that set up the dash to the finish, and seven lead changes among three different drivers (Vincent, Comstock and Terrell).

Vincent’s win gives him a one-point margin over Comstock heading into Race Seven of the eight-race series at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California next Monday night. O’Rourke sits third in the championship standings, three markers back.
