CONCORD, N.C. — Audio, photo and recap by Jacob Seelman for Speed77 Radio and Race Chaser Online — Tuesday night’s action at Charlotte Motor Speedway for Round 2 of the 21st annual Jack in the Box Summer Shootout saw several different kinds of doubles; some good, and one not so much.

Carson Ferguson (Young Lions) and Tom Pistone (Masters) both doubled their fun in the Shootout’s opening week by picking up their second straight wins in their respective divisions, while Riley Halverson grabbed his first win of the 2014 summer series in the Semi-Pro class.

Ferguson started third on the grid, just as he did en route to his opening night win, however this time the Ladyga Motorsports driver had to dig deep and fight through a furious battle from polesitter Ryan Millington in the opening laps. Millington hung tough on the outside through the opening laps, rolling momentum off the corner to hold the lead from Ferguson until a caution by the spinning #33 machine of Sprout Royal in Turn 1 drew the caution flag on Lap 3.

On the restart, Millington again held off Ferguson for another lap before a second caution flew in Turn 3 for a crash involving Scott Joy and Woodrow Mullis. Both cars would go off on the hook and be ultimately done for the night.

After that, it was all a matter of the choose cone and clean air. Ferguson chose the outside lane to slide up onto the front row with Millington for the restart, then rolled the top-side lane to the lead, a position he would not relinquish for the rest of the night despite two additional cautions and a restart within the final five laps.

“We just were patient tonight, played the cards we were dealt and it all worked out,” Ferguson grinned in Victory Lane after picking up his sixth career Young Lions Shootout victory. “I knew we had a good car, the race just had to come to us. Hats off to the Ladygas for making some great adjustments earlier in the day; it’s really cool to be sitting here two nights in a row.”

Behind Ferguson, Stefan Parsons came home second, followed by Christian Eckes, Millington and Matt Thomas completing the top five.

In the Masters feature, six cautions scarred the 25-lap main event after Robby Faggart, whose son Dillon won the previous night’s Semi-Pro feature, started from pole position. Pistone, who started the event seventh by virtue of being the points leader, quickly started dicing his way towards the front, and a caution for the spinning machine of Faggart helped his cause while both Faggart and Jeff Green moved to the rear for the restart.

On the restart, the front row of Scott Whitaker and Johnny Sossoman got together and drew another caution when Sossoman spun in Turn 1, however Sossoman was given his position back and restarted from the point. At this juncture, Pistone had fought his way into the top five and was starting to breathe down Sossoman’s rear bumper before taking the lead for good just as a caution came out on Lap 10.

Sossoman’s rear bumper had come off in the scramble for the lead, forcing him to pit road for repairs and to the back of the field for the restart. With the help of three more cautions and despite the tow being knocked so far out on the right front of the car that the right-front tire was torqued sideways, Sossoman fought his way all the way back up to second, but simply ran out of time to catch Pistone, who took home his second straight Masters victory.

Bruce Silver, Whitaker and Robbie Woodall rounded out the top five.

If you look at the box score, Halverson dominated the Semi-Pro portion of the night, leading all but about a half lap en route to his first Shootout win of the 2014 season, but his road to victory lane was far from simple. Halverson had to fend off a valiant effort by Austin Langenstein to secure the win. Halverson and Langenstein pulled away from the field in the early going after Langenstein carved his way from sixth up to second.

After a pair of cautions with five laps to go involving Robby Lyons and Devin O’Connell respectively, the stage was set for an intense run to the finish between Halverson and Langenstein. And intense it was. With three lead changes in one lap with four to go, it was Halverson by a nose at the stripe, Langenstein through turns 1 and 2, and then Halverson again in turn 3 after Langenstein got a little loose on corner exit after a tap from Halverson on the other end of the track.

That last tap was the one that mattered. Halverson went on to the win while Sheldon Crouse finished second after Langenstein, points leader Dillon Faggart and others were involved in a multi-car melee in Turn Four that ended their strong runs.

Josh Turner slipped through the carnage to take home third, with Shootout veteran Billy Webb and Josh Brimecombe completing the top five.

The night even involved a school bus race, as the Shootout is so well known for. Tim Farrar, principal of Northwest Cabarrus Middle School, raced his way to the win in the Principal School Bus Slobberknocker after defending winner Darin Roberts was unable to get his bus going on the start.

The seven-lap main event featured an exciting last lap battle in which Adam Auerbach of Wolf Meadow Elementary School made contact with another bus, ultimately turning the heavy machine on its side in turn 3. That incident ended the race.

Farrar pulled an impromptu Ricky Bobby impression after he claimed the checkered flag, rolling around in the infield grass to celebrate his victory.

“I headed to the infield to travel across, and I thought about nothing but Ricky Bobby. So we had to do a Ricky Bobby thing to celebrate this win with the Northwest fans,” Farrar explained in Victory Lane. “We look forward to it every year. It’s a great time had by all, and my staff enjoys coming out along with my students.”

The preliminary action was rife with storylines as well. A day removed from being in the back of an ambulance after a scary crash on the final lap of the Bandolero Outlaws feature, Chase Purdy and Justin Taylor finished one-two in their heat race, proving that despite a couple of hard hits, they were none the worse for wear.

All of that was the good news. The bad news was that Mother Nature also made a double feature appearance.

A deluge drenched the Speedway around 6:30 just as preliminary action was nearing its conclusion. The storm, complete with thunder and lightning, delayed the racing program for about an hour, but set up some exciting moments once the track was cleared of enough standing water to send the Legend Cars back out.

The final Young Lions heat race was run in the rain, as was Pro division qualifying. Enzo Fittipaldi, son of legendary open wheel and sports car driver Christian Fittipaldi, picked up the win in the exciting and waterlogged heat race, all without having rain tires on his race car.

Unfortunately, the weather returned following the Young Lions feature, and with massive amounts of lightning in the area, the Speedway was forced to postpone the remainder of the racing program to next week. Features for the Bandolero Beginner Bandits, Bandits, Outlaws and Legends Pro classes will be run prior to Round 3 preliminary action on Tuesday, June 17th.

In addition to racing action in all seven regular classes next week, fans can see the fast and the furriest battle it out on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval during the Mascot Mania go-kart race.
