Brandon Knupp has qualifying at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum figured out.

Knupp, behind the wheel of his No. 78 Advocare LTC National Midget, scored his second consecutive Rumble in Fort Wayne Quick Time Award during Friday’s time trials – with a lap he didn’t think was all that stellar.

“The run was decent, but tt’s off where I think we’re capable of being,” Knupp said following his run. “We’re worried about the long run stuff though, so we’ll keep working on it and try to make it a little better than where it is now. That’s what it’s about now.”

Knupp’s lap of 7.770 was enough to outdistance 2012 Rumble winner Derek Bischak. Bischak qualified second-fastest with a lap of 7.886 seconds around the one-sixth mile concrete oval.

Last year’s opening night fast qualifier, Cooper Clouse, timed in third after posting a lap of 7.934 seconds, with Kyle Hamilton (7.937) and Joe Ligouri, who held the top spot for most of the session, rounding out the top five qualifiers.

No one was able to match Tony Stewart’s all-time Rumble track record of 7.323 seconds – set in 2005.

The top 20 qualifiers made it into the invert for the heat races coming up later tonight.
