HOLLY, Mich. — After Brian Gerster closed his 2016 season with a vicious crash at Owosso Speedway last August, destroying one of the most productive winged asphalt sprint cars to ever hit the race track, the two-time Must See Racing Sprint Car Series champion is hoping to erase those bad memories this year.

Aboard a brand new Dick Myers-owned No. 50M ‘Mopar Missile’, Gerster will officially ignite his quest to return to the top of the Must See Racing field on April 21-22, having filed his entry for the third-annual Southern Shootout doubleheader weekend.

“We’re really looking forward to competing again with Must See Racing and returning to our high performance standards as a team,” Gerster said. “Dick Myers, Rick Ferguson and myself enjoy racing the MSR schedule because of the two-night weekends, solid purses and keeps us busy while still affording us some off weekends to catch our breath.”

“I’m just ready to put last year behind me,” he added. “That crash put a damper on the end of our year last year, but we’re back and I think we’re coming into this year better than we’ve ever been, so watch out for us in the Carolinas!”

With two races at Anderson (S.C.) Motor Speedway and Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway on tap, the Fishers, Indiana native is also hoping to dethrone two-time defending series champion Jimmy McCune, who swept the Carolina events one year ago.

Gerster and McCune sit tied atop the series’ all-time wins list with 16 victories apiece, and Gerster is far and away the series’ leading qualifier, having set fast time in 22 of the series’ 72 races over its seven-year history.

“It’s cool that we’ve been able to write a lot of history with Must See Racing, but I don’t look at the numbers a whole lot,” Gerster admitted last year after McCune tied his wins record. “It doesn’t matter who’s in the field … we go out every night aiming to be the best and take home the trophy. Everyone’s just another competitor when you put on the helmet.”

“This is one of the most formidable teams in all of racing, and there’s no doubt that they’re ready to get back at it after how they ended last season,” added Must See Racing President Jim Hanks. “We’re all expecting an epic Must See Racing championship points battle this year, showcased by some of the toughest competitors in the business. From Brian and two-time defending champion Jimmy McCune, all the way down to our new competitors entering the series this season, we’re going to have some great action and are looking forward to a great year.”
